Character-limited forms such as UCAS count spaces and punctuation — check them with the character counter, not a word counter.
How many paragraphs is an essay?
A useful rule: one body paragraph per main point, at 100–200 words each, plus an introduction and conclusion of roughly 10% of the total each.
- 500 words — 5 paragraphs (intro, three body, conclusion)
- 1,000 words — 6–8 paragraphs
- 2,000 words — 10–14 paragraphs
- 5,000 words — 25–35 paragraphs, usually with section headings
Check your structure with the paragraph counter, which shows the length of every paragraph.
Word-limit etiquette
- Most universities allow a margin of ±10%, but some apply penalties for any overrun — read the course handbook.
- Titles, reference lists, bibliographies and appendices are usually excluded; in-text citations and quotations are usually included.
- Coming in well under the limit usually signals missing depth rather than admirable concision.
- Word processors disagree slightly on hyphenated words and numbers, so leave yourself a small buffer.
